Euphrates River drying up: Fulfilling Jeremiah’s prophecy?

November 18, 2022

The region, once known as the Fertile Crescent, is on the verge of a food crisis as the main sources of water disappear. Officials struggle to cope as a prophetic scenario appears.

Iraqi officials are reporting that for three consecutive years, the rainy season has begun later and ended sooner than the historic norm. This has been coupled with less water flowing through its two main rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. …

Officials accuse Turkey of cutting the river’s flow upstream over the last two years to half the level it committed to in a 1987 accord, a claim the Turkish government denies. … Almost 90% of rain-fed crops, mostly wheat and barley, failed this season, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Iraq.

The 1,700-mile-long Euphrates is the main source of drinking water as well as powering three hydroelectric plants that produce electricity for about three million people in Syria. …

The Euphrates figures prominently in the Bible with it being described as bordering the Garden of Eden. …

The prophet Jeremiah described how the waters of Babylon, the region currently including Syria and Iraq, would dry up as a punishment for their idolatrous practices, the devastation being so complete as to render the region, once part of the so-called ‘fertile crescent’, uninhabitable.

“A drought against its waters, that they be dried up! For it is a land of idols; They are besotted by their dread images. Assuredly, Wildcats and hyenas shall dwell [there], And ostriches shall dwell there; It shall never be settled again, Nor inhabited throughout the ages.” Jeremiah 50:38-39

Both Christian and Muslim eschatology include prophecies of the drying up of the Euphrates signaling the end of days. In Islam, some of the hadiths suggest that the Euphrates will dry up, revealing unknown treasures that will be the cause of strife and war. In the Christian Book of Revelation, it is prophesied that … the … Euphrates … will dry up in preparation for the Battle of Armageddon. https://www.israel365news.com/359916/euphrates-river-drying-up-fulfilling-jeremiahs-prophecy/

There are droughts in many places, but what is happening now is not the prophesied ‘drying up of the Euphrates River’ in Revelation.

Now, the tweet at the beginning of the post is correct in implying that the Euphrates river is not drying up as the Bible warns in Revelation.

But there is no “smoke and mirrors” game going on. A reduction in the flow of the river Euphrates has happened from time to time–and even was reported about here back in 2009 (see Euphrates Drying Up?). Food shortages and food price inflation were prophesied for these times (e.g. Revelation 6:5-6; watch 3rd Horseman of the Apocalypse and Food), so the fact of the reduction of water in the Euphrates is consistent with that.

While angels certainly can count, the tweeter is correct in implying that many steps have to take place before God dries up the Euphrates as the Bible warns will happen.

First, we are still in what Jesus referred to as the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:4-8), and all of the sorrows are not fulfilled yet, nor have all four horsemen of the Apocalypse (Revelation 6:1-8) begun their rides (though some seem to have–watch These Signs of the 4 Horsemen Have Begun).

Second,  certain persecutions have not started (cf. Daniel 11:29-35, see also Persecutions by Church and State) and Matthew 24:14 related to preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God has not yet been fulfilled.

Third, the fifth seal of Revelation has not been opened (Revelation 6:9), hence the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21-22, see also When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?) has not begun–and those cannot happen until at 3 1/2 years after the ‘peace deal’ of Daniel 9:27 is confirmed–and then broken (see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27).

Fourth, the seven last plagues (Revelation 15:1) do not start until 2 1/2 years after the Great Tribulation begins.

Fifth, the following plagues need to happen before the Euphrates is dried up related to Armageddon:

1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth.”

2 So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.

3 Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the sea died.

4 Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying:

“You are righteous, O Lord,
The One who is and who was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,
And You have given them blood to drink.
For it is their just due.”

7 And I heard another from the altar saying, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.”

8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.  (Revelation 16:1-11)

Sixth, after all these things the Book of Revelation teaches the following will happen:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty (Revelation 16:12-14).

So, while it is true that the ultimate drying up of the Euphrates will come to pass, what is happening now is NOT THE FULFILLMENT OF REVELATION 16:12.

That cannot happen for at least seven years from now in the way that it would be needed to fulfill the prophecy in Revelation 16.

But we are getting much closer and the stage is being set.
