US President Donald Trump has abruptly backed down on tariffs on most nations for 90 days.
In response, the European Union said Thursday it would hold back on retaliation measures announced yesterday in response US tariffs targeting European steel and aluminium.
The EU was due to launch counter-tariffs on about €21 billion euros ($23.25 billion) of US imports starting next Tuesday.
But US-China trade tensions remain.

So, we see a type of cliffhanger for tariffs and global trade.

Yes.
He will do so in many ways, including several that few consider.
The Washington Post reported in late 2016 that Donald Trump admired Richard Nixon. It also reported:

Donald Trump’s foreign policy statements have unsettled many—in the USA as well as foreign nations. He is believed by many to be more unpredictable than Richard Nixon. Many have rightly pointed out that he often acts as a bully. …
One of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs and other trade matters is that it is motivating nations he has threatened to look to trade more with each other.

China is reaching out to other nations as the U.S. layers on more tariffs in what appears to be an attempt to form a united front to compel Washington to retreat. …
China has refused to seek talks, saying it would “fight to the end” in a tariff war, prompting Trump to further jack up the tax rate on Chinese imports to 125%. China has retaliated with tariffs on U.S. goods of 84%, which took effect Thursday.
Trump’s move was seemingly an attempt to narrow what had been an unprecedented trade war between the U.S. and most of the world to a showdown between the U.S. and China.
“A just cause receives support from many,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily briefing on Thursday. “The U.S. cannot win the support of the people and will end in failure.”
China has thus far focused on Europe, with a phone call between Premier Li Qiang and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “sending a positive message to the outside world.”
“China is willing to work with the EU to jointly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of China and the EU, strengthen communication and exchanges, and deepen China-EU trade, investment and industrial cooperation,” the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
That was followed by a video conference between Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Šefčović …

So, one intended consequence of Donald Trump’s actions is getting China trying to make a trade deal with the European and a variety of Gentile nations. That is also consistent with the following from my December 2024 list of 25 items to prophetically watch in 2025:

Europe will reach out to various ones in Asia and Africa, as well as Latin America. In the next several years, deals and more trade will occur with Africa, Asia, and Latin America. …
The reelection of Donald Trump will motivate many to trade with each other because of his threats of tariffs, etc. …
The final time of the Gentiles is approaching. We are seeing BRICS, the Global South, the EU, and others working on ways to trade and not have to deal with the descendants of Ephraim (UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) and Manasseh (the USA).
