In his newsletter today, Mike Gendron had the following:
Deceived and Defiant Against the Gospel
Clearly, the most difficult people to evangelize are those who are defiantly opposed to the Gospel because of religious bondage and deception.
Self-Conceit Leads to Self-Deceit
As prince of this world, Satan holds undiscerning people captive with religious pride and deceitful indoctrination. When you witness to them, their stubborn arrogance exposes their willful ignorance of God’s Word. Their stiff-necked self conceit leads to their unyielding self-deceit. Whenever prideful people are confronted in their self-deceit, they dig in their heels to prove they are right. A frequent example of this is when Roman Catholics are asked to repent and believe the Gospel. A common response is, “I was born a Catholic and I will die a Catholic.” My reply is always the same. According to the Bible, you were born a sinner and you will die a sinner unless you repent and believe the Gospel.
Religious Arrogance Blinds People
One of the most powerful tools Satan uses to “blind the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ” is religious pride and arrogance (2 Cor. 4:4). We see a vivid example of this when “Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people” (Acts 6:8). Some arrogant Jews rose up and argued with him because they were unable to cope with the wisdom and Spirit with which he was speaking. Stephen responded, “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did” (Acts 7:51). Because of their religious arrogance, they were brutally resistant to the truth, and with gnashing teeth, they stoned Stephen to death.
Deceitful Indoctrination Creates Pride
Many Catholics are deceived into believing they belong to the one true church. This deceitful indoctrination creates a lot of pride and a strong resistance to any teaching from non-Catholics. If Catholics were intellectually honest with themselves, they would have to acknowledge that their church looks nothing like the first century church. That is because it drifted into apostasy by departing from the faith of the apostles. Paul warned that “in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Tim. 4:1). Catholics need to be warned that any teaching contrary to the written Word of God is either a lie of the devil or a doctrine of demons. Every man’s teaching must be tested by the supreme authority of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16; Acts 17:11).
Catholic Responses to the Gospel
This ministry has been engaging Catholics with the Gospel for 32 years and we have heard some incredible responses. Following are several examples.
“I could no more renounce my Catholic faith than I could gouge out my eyes! What type of people are you? You have no idea what Christ teaches! I am a proud Catholic who is also proud to say that he respects all religions that seek peace in love. I am offended by your insults! They will lead to everlasting torment!”
Another proud Catholic responded this way. “You are so misinformed it is pathetic. I have the authority of Christ’s Church. Protestant sects have nothing. I know the Church back to front and I have loved the Catholic Church since I was born.”
Let me add that most who profess Christianity do not truly understand the true gospel (see also the free online booklet: The Gospel of the Kingdom of God).
Related to self-deception, The Atlantic posted the following:
Quit Lying to Yourself
November 18, 2021
No one wants to be seen as a liar. Liars are considered untrustworthy at best and immoral at worst. And yet, we are perfectly content to lie to ourselves all the time. “I’ll enjoy this sleeve of Oreos today because my diet starts tomorrow,” I might tell myself. Or, “I love my job; who cares that I complain about it constantly?” Or even—ironically—“I am always honest with myself.”
Deceiving yourself shouldn’t make logical sense. After all, lying involves telling someone something you know to be untrue. When you are both the liar and one lied to, this means you have to both know the truth and not know the truth. In practice, that means willfully disregarding key knowledge to arrive at a conclusion that is more convenient than what the facts appear to suggest.
Everyone self-deceives, but that doesn’t make it harmless. At high levels, it is associated with poor mental health. At moderate levels, it can temporarily protect the self-deceiver from bad feelings but still presents a barrier to the deep well-being that comes from living with integrity. To be really happy, we must learn to be completely honest with ourselves. …
If you are willfully oblivious to your flaws, you can’t correct them. https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2021/11/self-deception-honesty-lying/620739/?utm_source=pocket-newtab
Related to that last statement, consider the following scriptures:
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. (1 John 1:8-10)
Repentance is needed so we can believe, live, and understand the truth.
Related to pride and self-deception, the Continuing Church of God (CCOG) put out the following video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel:

Pride: Quit Lying to Yourself
‘The Atlantic’ ran an article titled “Quit Lying to Yourself.’ It explained that this was not good and does not lead to happiness. The BBC ran an article about dangers of self-deception. The Bible warns about lies, self-deception, and pride. Does the New Testament warn that Christians can be deceived? What did Jesus say was the truth? What did Jesus tell end-time Laodicean Christians to do? Dr. Thiel addresses these issues and more in this video.

Now, let’s look again at something Mike Gendron wrote:
If Catholics were intellectually honest with themselves, they would have to acknowledge that their church looks nothing like the first century church. That is because it drifted into apostasy by departing from the faith of the apostles.
That is true.
And for those interested in the documented truth on that, we put together a free online book: Beliefs of the Original Catholic Church: Could a remnant group have continuing apostolic succession?
But just because the Greco-Roman Catholics changed that does not make Protestants, like Mike Gendron, right.
Why?
Well, because there was nothing resembling modern Protestantism in first or second century Christianity. For documented details, check out the free online book: Hope of Salvation: How the Continuing Church of God Differs from Protestantism.
Greco-Roman Catholics tend to realize that the Protestants do not represent the original faith, hence do not consider that the Protestants can possibly be right.
But that, of course, does not make the Greco-Roman Catholics right.
Let me add that this does not, then, make the Jehovah’s Witnesses (see Similarities and Differences Between the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Continuing Church of God) or the LDS (Mormons; see Teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Continuing Church of God) right either as their faith also is not the original Christian one.
It is actually only the true Church of God (COG) which continues the beliefs and practices of the original first and second century Christians.
While many with COG ties realize that to some degree, that does not mean that they cannot have any issues with pride or self-deception.
Regarding most true end-time Christians, Jesus had the following to say:
14 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write,
‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ — and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked — 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
22 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘” (Revelation 3:14-22)
Laodiceans do not want to change as they are comfortable where they are and have deceived themselves.
So, it is not just the Greco-Roman Catholics, Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, or Mormons that have prideful religious deception.
Hopefully, YOU will heed the words of Jesus.
The last book of the Bible warns that those who believe and love lies, this would include false traditions as well as lying to oneself, will not be in the Kingdom of God if they will not change and keep God’s commandments:
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and lewd men, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoever loveth and maketh a lie. (Revelation 22:14-15, KJV)
Let me add that although Laodicean Christians “do his commandments,” they are subject to death and persecution during the Great Tribulation as they are not protected from it per Revelation 12:17 (see also There is a Place of Safety for the Philadelphians. Why it May Be Near Petra).
Jesus taught that Satan was a liar and the father of lies:
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it (John 8:44)
Satan allowed his pride to deceive him (Ezekiel 28:14-18), and thus, he seems to have been the father of self-deception.
Of course, Satan pushes deception and encourages humans to deceive themselves. Recall what happened to Eve:
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. (1 Timothy 2:14)
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (Genesis 3:6-7)
Satan was involved, but the woman allowed herself to be deceived. This type of deception happens every day.
Christians are to be set apart by the truth, which allows them to be set free from the deception Satan and others have foisted on this world:
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (John 17:17)
31 … “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)
In Matthew 7:22, Jesus warned that deceit and pride defile humans.
Many professing Christians have pride that their nation will last longer than it will. They will not take the biblically encouraged steps to become Philadelphian Christians (cf. Revelation 3:7-13; see also The Philadelphia Church Era).
Pride is a form of self-deception.
With pride, people have overconfidence in themselves and this is deceiving. Humility involves seeing yourself more like you really are.
The Book of Proverbs teaches:
2 When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)18 Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)
Pride and self-deception are common.
Try not to fall for it and other snares that Satan pushes:
6 … Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:7-10)
The word of God is truth (John 17:17), hopefully you will believe it enough so that you will resist Satanically-encouraged self-deception (cf. James 4:7).
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. … 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. (James 1:12,14-17)
James would not have the above warning if it were not possible. Sadly, most end-time Christians have fallen victim to self-deception.
YOU, even if you are a Christian, need to be on guard about it.
